3-Way bets

When looking at markets that always tend to confuse bettors, one story in particular sticks out to me when it comes to my time with the Valley Forge Casino. I had someone try to cash a ticket, claiming their 1st period hockey bet was a winner. It wasn’t. The customer bet a side on a 3-way moneyline wager for the 1st period. When you have a 3-way wager, that means one of the 3 outcomes has to happen. In this instance, the customer bet the home team to win the first period. The other two options were a tie or the away team. The result of the 1st period was a tie, so the customer assumed they’d be getting their money back. This isn’t the case. The customer bet the home team when there are two other options also available to bet. Since the tie was also an option, he is bet lost being he bet the home team. This tends to be a pretty common issue with bettors, especially those unfamiliar with these markets.

Whenever you’re betting, make sure you understand the available outcomes. If you have two outcomes available, it’s expected to be one of the other. If the results are different from the two available outcomes, your bet becomes void (unless listed otherwise). When you see that third market (or multiple other markets) you need to be aware that the listed markets are required to be the outcome. If you pick a side, it needs to be that side or your bet will lose.
